NES SOAP

NES Soap | Natural Ethical Skin and Soap was founded in 2020 in Dunedin, NZ by Elza and Nathaniel Shaw. You can find a great selection of their soap, candles, skincare and fragrances at GUILD.

Tell us a little about what you make.

At NES Soap, we (Elza and Nathaniel) create skin and scent products that are vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated with sensitivity in mind. Our range includes perfumes, body butters, lip balms, muscle and healing balms, beard balm, candles, and soaps. Everything we make is designed to be kind to the skin, especially for people with sensitivities, and kind to the planet.

What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?

Our journey into making was very personal. For me (Elza), it began with the search for skincare that was gentle, effective, and aligned with my values. I have sensitive skin and wanted to create products that felt safe, joyful, and nourishing. Nathaniel is a chef by trade, but he’s also had a deep interest in scent since he was a teenager. After visiting the Fragonard perfume factory in France, he became fascinated by the world of fragrance – how it’s made, how it evokes memory and emotion, and how closely it connects to food and flavour. When we started experimenting with soaps and scents at home, it just clicked. Our skill sets are different but complementary. I focus on skincare and formulation, and Nathaniel brings his instinct for scent blending and creativity in crafting experiences. Together, we’ve built a business that combines care, curiosity, and a whole lot of joy.

How would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?

Our aesthetic is minimalist but fun and colorful. We want our products to spark joy while feeling fresh and approachable. We love clean lines, bright pops of color, and a bit of playfulness.

Inspiration comes from many places – the landscapes of New Zealand, the scents of the season, and the people who use our products. We design to uplift and soothe at the same time.

Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?

Don’t wait for perfect. Start with what brings you joy. Your voice, your style, and your business will evolve as you go. Stay curious, ask questions, and trust that your unique perspective has value. Stay connected to your “why,” especially on the hard days, and keep showing up. Celebrate the small wins, and don’t be afraid to be seen. Most importantly, lean into community. Creative work is so much better when shared.
